    TEACH NONVIOLENCE

Throughout the school year, Nonviolence Teachers engage students with Gandhian and Kingian Ideas of Nonviolence and reflect on how these ideas apply to relationship with self, our communities, and society. In nurturing language and literacy development, students engage with in-person and online curriculum that fosters the understanding of self identity and a connection to the culture of nonviolence.

    TEACH ART

Throughout the school year, Teaching Artists engage students in art projects across different mediums (i.e. drawing, painting, mixed media, crafting, sculpture, music, poetry, dance, drumming, jewelry making and more) to apply the Ideas and Practices of Nonviolence. Students engage with in-person and online curriculum that centers the understanding of resilience through art, artists, and art practices in the world.

Cross-curricular applications with nonviolence and art are acutely applied to Math, Science, and Tech classes because of the meaningful exchange of knowledge, to build future community workplace and leadership.

  • TEAM TEACHING

Each class uses a Team Teaching model where there is a Nonviolence Teacher supporting the learning of Gandhian and Kingian Ideas of Nonviolence, and a Teaching Artist facilitating an art project where students channel their creativity and apply the Ideas and Practices of Nonviolence. Instructors of Nonviolence and Teaching Artists facilitate learning for equivalent time (1:1) and there is at least 30 minutes time allotted for students to share snacks or a meal together provided by RCA (Rebels Create Art).

In each class, literacy and language skills are promoted through effective teaching practices where scaffolding of instruction, readings and discussions, inquiry and project-based learning, and critical thinking are applied to different learning styles to foster a positive and generative learning environment in the classroom.
